Busy February in Kerdruc
February has been very wet and cold….as has most of the winter here! At least we don't have the terrible floods that Paris and the areas around the Seine have! They have even had snow which our area has had but we missed it by just a few kilometers since we are so close to the ocean. At least the daffodils and tulips are looking good.
The best news is the work being done on the house. Our landlord, Vince, has asked John, the husband of the sister of good friends to come to do many of the things that have been needed inside and outside the house. The first day was hauling away the rotten, wet and slippery old decking on the terrace just outside the door to the garden. After huge bags of dirt and wood were taken to the dechetterie we found the base to be concrete. It looks 100% better just without the wood. We have been researching decking options. Also, our shutters on the front of the house were in dismal shape, so John took them back to the U.K. with him to work on. He will return during the next school holiday during Easter to finish many of the projects. His wife, Karen, is a school teacher and they are a lot of fun and she also helped with the dismantling of the deck.

We have also had some fun meeting the American English teacher of our French neighbor. Kerry is from Houston and we had 2 hours of fun talking about all the things we miss about the U.S. and the things that we love about France. She is 37 and has been married to a French man and then divorced. She now lives with another French man and is looking for a new career after spending 5 years working in Lorient hiring young people from 5 European countries to work at Epcot Center in Florida for Disney. Her French is awesome after living here for 12 years. She is enjoying teaching for the first time. So…she gave us many good ideas about books to read and places to get U.S. products we miss…..s'mores anyone?????? The "My American Market" in Toulouse is amazing in its selection….and the prices are a bit high, but it beats packing them in our suitcases!!!!
Another fun evening last night in the Salle de Fete in Nevez….our 5th annual Tartiflette dinner to raise money for the Jumelage with a town in the French alps. Always a delicious dinner and our first friends in Nevez, John and Lynne, were there with our neighbors Marie Christine and Jean Luc. There were no places to sit with them so we sat with some people we had never met….to our surprise, the current Mayor of Nevez sat down next to Tom after he finished his tour of meeting friends. He was surprised to learn that there are Americans living in Kerdruc! He enjoyed chatting with Tom and finding out what we are doing in France. We also reconnected with neighbors of ours who gave a very in depth history of the tidal mill at Henan near our house after the Jour de Patrimoine in September. What we didn't know was that they removed the entire roof of the mill and will add a new one….lots of things going on!!!!! We are hoping for a dryer and warmer March…here's hoping!!!!!
