Beautiful countryside...and wonderful lunch with friends
We were fortunate to have been invited to the house in St. Jaques that belongs to Mike and Sally's friends from the U.K. It was a 30 minute drive north from our house and the drive was beautiful along green fields and rolling hills. This is the real country which is a little different from our area near the sea!
Mike and Sally are caring for the house while their friends are in the U.K. There are about 10 chickens that lay eggs and one wonderfully sweet german shepherd. The house was a ruin before extensive renovation but now it is a very comfortable, beautiful two story Breton house. We had tea and toured the estate...huge property which was all manicured and green. Lots of flowers in bloom and even a new pond.
We then drove to the Routier near the village of Leuhan and had the most awesome lunch for 12.50 € each..including an entree of everything under the sun and then a main dish of pork or fish...we had the pork cooked Breton style in cider with potatoes. Wine was included as were other drinks. Then was the cheese course and finally a dessert selection...we had wonderful cream puffs. Everything except the main course was chosen by us and taken to our table. What wonderful owners who greeted us warmly. We are not yet accustomed to being greeted with a kiss from the proprietress upon entering a truck stop, but they recognized Sally and Mike and were glad to see them back. Routiers, also called Relais, are primarily truck stops which are popular with families, especially on Sunday, open only for two hours at lunch. What a wonderful way to have lunch! Their specials once a month on select Fridays are: veal head, kig ha farz (meat and vegetable stew with buckwheat dumpling), couscous, and moules frites. What a wonderful day with Mike and Sally!
