What a great day and night with a full moon and no rain in sight! As you can guess, we have rain and clouds most every day and a crystal clear day is rare, but it is much better than snow and ice which the rest of France has been dealing with.

Pretty Chateaulin on the Nantes/Brest Canal
Sunday after lunch we ventured to the north, past Quimper and on the way to Brest. Beautiful rolling hills with green pastures. We first went to Chateaulin on the Nantes-Brest Canal where Lynn and I had been on our way to Brest last week. We found a beautiful 15th century chapel on a very steep hill and had the company of a very friendly cat who wanted to come home with us.

Another beautiful chapel on the way to Menez Hom

Chapel in the hamlet of Ste-Marie-du-Menez-Hom
Then on to Menez Hom which was windy and cold, but very unlike the France we've seen...at 1,083 feet. The Celts believed this mountain to be sacred.

Menez Hom view of Atlantic Ocean
Ménez-Hom (alt 330m) is the summit of the Black Mountains and one of the highest parts of Brittany. It occupies a key position commanding the approach to the Crozon peninsula, over which it affords a wonderful view. You will be able to admire the Bay of Douarnenez and the Cornouaille to the south, the Crozon coast to the north, and the Pointe de St-Mathieu, the Tas de Pois, the Pointe de Penhir, Brest and its harbour. (From the Michelin Guide)
Pleyben was our next destination with its beautiful 15th century church of Saint Germain and calvary which was built in 1555, which is one of the finest in Brittany.
The gospel in stone, designed for the edification of illiterate worshippers. They depict The Last Supper, The Entry into Jerusalem, and Christ Washing the Feet of His Disciples (from Eyewitness Travel - Brittany)
Gorgeous!!! And a kitty to top it off! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, that church of Saint Germain and calvary is wonderful. The local people have kept it so beautiful. Another lovely travel around and see new-old things day.
